House of Representatives voted down a $700 billion plan

House Rejects Bailout Bill; Wall Street Shudders
by Dina Temple-Raston

In a shocking defeat that rocked Wall Street, the House of Representatives voted down a $700 billion plan aimed at rescuing banks and unfreezing the world's credit markets.
The news of the 228-205 defeat sent the stock market reeling. The Dow Jones industrial average recorded its biggest closing point drop in history, closing down 777.68 points — or nearly 7 percent — to 10,365.45.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson spoke to reporters at the White House after a discussion with President Bush aimed at mapping out the way forward. He said he would keep working to get a bill. "We need to work as quickly as possible," Paulson said. "We need to get something done. We need to put something back together that works."

Market analysts said Paulson and the Bush administration more generally were at least partially to blame for stirring up the sturm und drang that ended with Monday's stock market plunge.
The Bush economic team has been saying for weeks that the financial world as we know it would end if a rescue plan was not put in place in short order. So when the bill failed in the House, investors naturally ran for the closest exits. For all his doom-casting after the vote, Paulson did inject a faint note of confidence. He said the banking system so far "has been holding up very well, considering all of the pressures." [NPR}

Super-hot chili dare may have caused the death of an aspiring chef

Fox News reports about an aspiring chef died after eating a super-hot chilli sauce as part of an endurance competition with a friend.
Andrew Lee, 33, challenged his girlfriend’s brother to a contest to see who could eat the spiciest sauce that he could create.
The fork-lift truck driver, who wanted to cook for a living, prepared a tomato sauce made with red chillies grown on his father’s allotment. After eating it, however, he suffered intense discomfort and itching. The following morning he was found dead, possibly after suffering a heart attack.
Toxicology tests are being conducted to try to establish if he suffered a reaction to the food.
An inquest was told that Lee, from Edlington, England, was in perfect health and had just passed a medical examination at work. He was a keen cook and would often prepare meals for his parents. It is believed that Mr Lee had never prepared a dish as hot as the one he made the night before his death.
Lee’s sister, Claire Chadbourne, 29, said that he took a jar of the sauce to the home of his girlfriend, Samantha Bailey, and challenged her brother Michael, 29, to see who could eat it. “Andrew just ate the chillies with a plate of Dolmio sauce,” she added. “It was not a proper meal because he had already eaten lamb chops and potato mash after work.
“He apparently got into bed at 2.30am and started scratching all over. His girlfriend scratched his back until he fell asleep. She woke up and he had gone. It is incredible. Who would have thought he could have died from eating chilli sauce? We don’t know of anything else that could have caused his death. The postmortem showed no heart problems.
“He loved cooking for his friends. He always said he wanted to be a chef but didn’t want to start at the bottom.”
An inquest was opened and adjourned in Doncaster last week.

BBC News report on Cadbury chocolates found with melamine, recalled

Cadbury was always a family favorite for the longest time. It was by far the best and hearing this news makes me sad and worried.

Cadbury had earlier recalled 11 chocolate types from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia because of fears of contamination.
It remains unclear how much melamine was in the recalled products, a Cadbury spokesman told the BBC.
"It's early days, as these are preliminary findings from the tests," the spokesman said.

Governor Vilma Santos being compared with Governor Sarah Palin

Gov. Vi is being compared with Gov. Sarah Palin and I'm glad that more and more people are noticing. As I have been trying to say all along, experience can be gained, but honesty, integrity, hard work, common sense, and good intentions are what they both have that are missing in other big time politicians.

Santos-Recto has several things in common with the 44-year-old Republican vice-presidential candidate, aside from being both women:

They’re both “hot” governors.
They both have “hot” husbands.
They’re both first woman governors of their respective territories.
They’ve both been on the cover of fashion magazines (see Palin’s nice Vogue cover photo).
They both have “moral” issues: Palin has a pregnant teenage daughter and eloped to marry Todd; Santos was pregnant before she married her first “hot” husband, Edu Manzano (who is reportedly eyeing a Senate seat in 2010).

Sarah Palin needs a break to, once again, prove herself

Of course we know who are mocking Sara Palin for her lack of experience. But no one was born already knowing everything about foreign policy. Anyone and everyone who knew about the foreign policy today went through some learning and training, so what’s the mocking for? Experience is the best teacher so why not let Sarah Palin go through the experience. For those who supposedly have experience and were brilliant in foreign matters, the question is, if anybody really knew what they were doing, so why are we, and the entire world, facing recession today? Sarah Palin can gain the experience just like everybody else. Obama is a Harvard trained politician, but I have not heard any good thing that he has done for the country. Has there been a record of accomplishments by Obama. What kind of experience does he offer? Have you noticed how many times he has changed his remarks on different issues like abortion, for example? He cannot even make up his mind.

As an example, in my country, the Philippines, there are so many highly educated politicians. They were proud to be UP, Ateneo or La Salle graduates, but their diplomas did not do the country any good. Look, the country is even listed as one of the most corrupt and one of the poorest countries in the world. It simply tells us that we probably need someone like Sarah Palin to make the changes we need. We need a hard working someone with lots of real common sense and not just bunch of titles attached to their names. We need action, not arrogance. We need results and not empty promises. We need someone who can deliver and walk the talk. We need Sarah Palin.

Heather Locklear arrested on DUI but later released on bail

" "Heather Locklear was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance in the upscale Santa Barbara area, authorities said Sunday.

Locklear, 47, was pulled over by a California Highway Patrol officer Saturday afternoon after a resident reported seeing the actress leaving a parking lot and "driving erratically," patrol spokesman Tom Marshall said.

The officer noticed Locklear's car parked on a state highway and blocking a lane in Montecito, a wealthy community about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles. She was believed to be alone in the car, Marshall said.

"In talking with her, (the officer) determines that she seems to be under the influence of something," Marshall said.

Locklear was taken to the police station, where she was tested for alcohol and drugs. She was booked at 7 p.m. on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription medication. She was later released from custody.

Calls to Locklear's publicists were not immediately returned.

Locklear's TV credits include "T.J. Hooker," "Dynasty," "Melrose Place" and "Spin City," and her film roles include "The Perfect Man" and "Uptown Girls."

Locklear checked into a medical clinic in June to seek treatment for anxiety and depression.

Last year, she got a divorce from Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora after 11 years of marriage. They have a daughter, Ava Elizabeth. "

Pacquiao vs De La Hoya limited tickets available

Pacquiao vs De La Hoya tickets now available
by Joseph Pimentel/AJPress
LOS ANGELES — Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank announced that ticket sales for “The Dream Match” between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao started to go on sale Wednesday, Sept. 24.
The 12-round welterweight super fight between six-division world champion De La Hoya and No. 1 pound-forpound fighter Pacquiao is slated for Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Top Rank President Bob Arum said that the demand for the tickets has been remarkable.

"There are very few tickets left because the orders have been tremendous," Arum told the Asian Journal. "I know the people in the Philippines are ordering a massive amount of tickets."

During the interview, Arum referred to De La Hoya as the "Mexican kid" in jest. He said that the fight is going to live up to the hype.

"It’s going to be a great fight and I know the Mexican kid is bigger and a tremendous fighter but I think Manny’s speed and determination will give him the edge," said Arum. "And Freddy Roach and I see this fight the same way that Manny will win the fight and it won’t be close. He’ll win it decisively."

Tickets are priced at $1,500, $1,000, $750, $500, $250, and $150.

Top Rank officials said that ticket sales are limited to two per person at each price level with a total ticket limit of four per person. Tickets are available online at www.mgmgrand. com, www.ticketmaster. com or by calling Ticketmaster. (Joseph Pimentel)

The rising of our very own Charice is our rising too

One more time, Charice
Asian Journal Editorial

With the whirlwind of events happening in Charice’s life in the past few months, one would think that she’d be overexposed to the public and this shooting star would dim down in the long run.
We beg to disagree.

After being discovered in YouTube by Ellen Degeneres, Charice has soared through the mainstream entertainment scene with appearances in Oprah (twice no less) and performing with popular artists like hit maker David Foster, Michael Buble and Josh Groban. Outside the US, Charice has also wowed audiences in Rotterdam and was invited by Andrea Bocelli in his hometown in Italy. But the piece de resistance was performing in Madison Square Garden with one of the greatest divas—Celine Dion.

She was no front act—as she was considered as the highlight of the concert. That same night, Charice was able to fulfill her greatest dream—to perform in New York’s famed Madison Square Garden, with Ms. Dion.

But the most important thing that happened that night was Charice’s performance has made us proud to be Pinoys. She has once again affirmed that Filipinos are world-class performers, at par with international artists.

We look forward to seeing more of Charice—she is, after all, already a star. One can only imagine how far she can still go, and how many times all over she can make us proud. (AJ)

What I think of Charlene and Kris' latest feud

Charlene and Kris are totally different from each other, having different personalities and background. Both are well-liked and came from famous families. The problem here is the usual lack of diplomacy on the part of Kris. She‘d say what she feels without thinking of what might the consequences be. I totally agree with her that she gave Charlene another reason to dislike her. Charlene can only put up so much and though she's a nice and a well educated individual, she also has limits, thus the respond – do you have a problem with my dress - to Kris just to let her know that she (Kris) is already becoming annoying. On the other hand, Kris immediately made a public apology to Charlene probably after her conscience realized what she had done. The good part is both were being sports and know how to act more appropriately to try to stop the fire before it even escalates.

Charlene on Kris: Burn no bridges
Marinel Cruz
MANILA, Philippines—“I did not talk about it for fear of being misquoted,” Charlene Gonzalez said, days after TV host Kris Aquino apologized for an apparently offensive comment made against the former beauty queen, also a TV host, at a fashion event.
“The industry is so small; we shouldn’t burn bridges,” Charlene told entertainment writers at a Q11 party on Tuesday.

During the recent show of designer Randy Ortiz at the Edsa Shangri-la Hotel, Kris commented that Charlene was “pa-star” because the latter’s gown was not in the shade of the set motif. At the end of the show, Charlene confronted Kris, asking, “Do you have a problem with my dress?”

In a text message to “TV Patrol” Kris said, “Obviously, [Charlene] doesn’t like me... my mistake was, I gave her another reason to dislike me…so I apologized.”

Charlene said she was happy that the public took her side when the incident was reported in the papers. “Nakakataba ng puso. I guess it means that I’ve planted good seeds through the years.”

Woman With Suspended License Has Son, 13, Drive

GETTYSBURG, Pa. —
A Gettysburg woman told police she couldn't drive because of a suspended license — so she was a passenger as her 13-year-old drove.
The boy was pulled over Tuesday night when police said he drove 64 mph in a 40 mph zone in Cumberland Township, Adams County.
Police say the woman faces numerous charges. Her son also faces charges

(I can't fathom what the mother was thinking because, as a mom myself, I won't ever expose my child to any form of risk or danger. Did she realize her son could get in trouble for what she had let him do? Apparently not.)

Jessica Alba looking sexy after three months of giving birth

This is Jessica Alba, three months after giving birth to a baby girl.
According to Fox News, Jessica Alba revealed her sexy bikini body while vacationing in Mexico this week — only three months after giving birth to baby Honor Marie.

Her trainer Ramona Braganza — who last month revealed that Alba, 27, had already lost 25 pounds — says the rapid results are the result of consistent workouts since Alba and husband Cash Warren welcomed Honor Marie on June 7.
"She worked out an hour a day, five or six days a week, and stayed on a strict diet of about 1,700 calories a day, losing 600 calories because of exercise," Braganza told People magazine.
Alba stuck to a low-fat, low-carb diet as part of Braganza's 12-week 321 Baby Bulge Be Gone plan. She said she wanted to take off the weight in a responsible amount of time, but Braganza told People that she made "amazing progress in a very short time. She really works at it."

The actress told the August issue of U.K. Cosmopolitan that she "never felt less sexy" than when she was expecting, adding, "I mean, I wouldn't have changed it.

China’s tainted milk scandal now to include baby cereals

As reported by Anita Chang of the Associated Press, the list of products caught in China's tainted milk scandal grew Friday to include baby cereal in Hong Kong and snack foods in Japan, while Taiwan reported three children and a mother with kidney stones in the island's first cases possibly linked to the crisis.

The Japanese government also said it had suspended imports of milk and milk products from China, where some 54,000 children have developed kidney stones or other illnesses after drinking baby formula contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine. Four deaths have been blamed on the tainted milk.

The latest problematic foods were Heinz baby cereal and Silang House steamed potato wasabi crackers. The Hong Kong government said in a statement Friday it found traces of melamine in the products, which were both made in mainland China.

Has Sarah Palin acquired a celebrity status?

In my own opinion, yes. As written by BRENDAN FARRINGTON - an Associated Press Writer - in her article here, she was welcomed like a star, with tens of thousands cramming into a plaza and nearby streets in this enormous retirement community about an hour north of Orlando. Some waited more than five hours in 92-degree heat to see her speak for 23 minutes. The visit drew a few contrasts between Palin and Obama running mate Joe Biden.

The largest was the crowd. Some people had to wait in line about 90 minutes just to park their cars. Biden's largest crowd during a visit earlier this month was about 2,000.
But Biden made four stops in his two days, and ventured into Republican strongholds like Fort Myers and Sarasota. He took questions from the audience at each stop and did interviews with local media.
Still, Palin had star power. One teenage girl held up a sign that read, "When I grow up, I want to be Sarah Palin." Another sign read, "This chick supports Sarah Palin." Many said they didn't even know who Palin was until last month.

"I knew absolutely nothing," said Tyler Deeds, 19, who made the drive from Auburndale 90 miles away and waited more than 5 hours to see Palin. "I couldn't even tell you who the governor of Alaska was."

But Deeds, who plans to enter the Navy soon, said he "tends to cling to my guns and religion" and he quickly grew excited about Palin's candidacy.

Joan Guay, 81, dabbed bottled water on her arms as she waited for Palin in the broiling heat. She said she previously supported Democrat Hillary Clinton.

"This country needs a woman up there," Guay said. "I like her background, I like her family. It's a family that does things together. And I like her work in the community."
